The Ipswich Star reports on our Viking invasion!

Image: Charlotte Bond, Ipswich Star

We were delighted to be featured in the Ipswich Star on Saturday 22 January 2022. Readers were told about our forthcoming new menu for The Gallery, the Suffolk Vegans Veganuary meet-up, and our plans for the Vikings grab-and-go café.

We would like to note that something in the article regarding our kitchen was lost in translation. The article stated that we are entirely free of allergens, but the report should have said we are entirely plant-based with a good selection of gluten-free options. In any case, it was great to give the local media an update, and we are humbled by the positive response the story has received.

Celebrate Veganuary with Suffolk Vegans!

Suffolk Vegans x The Gallery x Vikings Bakehouse

Let’s celebrate Veganuary together!

The Gallery and Vikings Bakehouse cordially invite you to join us to celebrate Veganuary and the return of the Suffolk Vegans meet-ups! On Wednesday 26 January 2022 between 18:00 – 21:00, The Gallery will be hosting a special event exclusively for Suffolk Vegans, with Vikings Bakehouse offering a full vegan food menu! The Gallery is only open to the public on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays, so this really is an exclusive affair for the vegan community. Go with friends and/or meet the friends you never knew you had!

Tickets, please!

To ensure this special event is viable for The Gallery and Vikings Bakehouse to prepare and staff accordingly, admission will be ticket only. Tickets are available for £5 per person, plus a small booking fee. The entry fee includes a sumptuous welcome drink upon arrival, either a snazzy mocktail, Little Red Dress (alcohol-free gin, gomme, raspberry syrup and fresh lemon juice), or an awesome cocktail, Daiquiri (rum, gomme and fresh lime juice). Tickets may be available on the evening, but we strongly recommend booking your ticket in advance to avoid disappointment. We will refund all tickets which are canceled with at least 24 hours’ notice.

Booking fee?

The booking fee is taken by our chosen ticket seller platform, Humanitix, a 100% for-purpose entity and a registered charity that donates all of its profits to social impact projects for disadvantaged children. It’s a new model for effective altruism – they call it “compassionate capitalism”. We concur. For more information on Humanatix, see

The venue

The Gallery is Ipswich’s most exclusive – and perhaps most exquisite – cocktail bar. What could be better? How about the fact that everything is vegan!? Please note that the dress code is smart casual and that The Gallery is an over 18s venue. The Gallery offers plenty of room to ensure you will feel safe and comfortable. Staff will be wearing face masks, and hand sanitizer will be freely available.

The menu

The Veganuary meet-up will be the launch event of The Gallery’s new food menu, prepared in the adjacent Vikings Bakehouse. We are keeping the new food line-up under wraps until the meet-up – you will be the first to see it! – but rest assured there will be substantial options, lighter options, healthy options, indulgent options, gluten-free options, sweet options, and that everything is, of course, suitable for vegans.

Your hosts for the evening, Suffolk Vegans!

Founded by local artist, Victoria Petchey, Suffolk Vegans is a friendly group of local vegans who have organised events since 2018, including meet-ups at Hanks, Hullabaloo, Dance East and Christchurch Park. Suffolk Vegans were involved in bringing a screening of Dominion to Ipswich in September 2018, and recently co-organised a successful vegan Christmas market in Felixstowe in December 2021. For more information on Suffolk Vegans, please see their Facebook page.

Did you know?

The relationship between The Gallery/Vikings Bakehouse and Suffolk Vegans is by no means a new one. The very first Suffolk Vegans meet-up was hosted at The Gallery’s big sister venue, Isaacs on the Quay, on 2 December 2017.

The ocean is in danger so we are helping Surfers Against Sewage to protect it

Vikings Bakehouse recognises that our oceans are in danger and that humanity must act to ensure that future generations of humans – and non-humans – are able to enjoy the majesty of our common inheritance: the vast seas of the earth. It is for this reason that we are proud to announce that we have made a donation to become official members of Surfers Against Sewage’s 250 Club.

Who are Surfers Against Sewage?

SAS began as a response by the surfing community to the dreadful state of British beaches. Those hardy souls who ventured into the water back then often found themselves swimming in raw sewage. There are tales of sanitary towels on the heads of surfers, and human poo sandwiched between bodies and boards. Grim.

Thanks to the passion and perseverance of SAS members, the United Kingdom now enjoys some of the cleanest beaches in Europe. Of course, it’s not just surfers who care passionately about our coastlines. SAS members include swimmers, dog walkers, paddleboarders, beach cleaners, kite surfers, sandcastle builders, ice cream eaters, sunbathers, joggers…and Vikings.

Surfers Against Sewage utilises donations towards several key aims

• An education project reaching thousands of young people all over the United Kingdom, inspiring youngsters to take action on plastic waste in their schools.

• A support program for hundreds of towns and cities on their journey to becoming plastic-free communities.

• Exerting pressure on the Government to outlaw non-recyclable plastics, and on industry to take full responsibility for their involvement in plastic waste.

• Supporting the UK’s vast network of over 100,000 volunteers, empowering people to reduce their plastic use, clean up plastic pollution, and galvanise their communities to protect the marine environment.

The ocean is in danger. We don’t have much time to save it. SAS needs your support to help drive its campaigns and to secure a thriving future for the ocean.

We will be announcing more information on our partnership with SAS in the coming weeks and months. For more information on supporting SAS and/or to make a donation, please visit Surfers Against Sewage online.

Thank you, Beach Street! What’s next?

Thank you to Suffolk Vegans and Hazel & Co Yoga for hosting us at the vegan Christmas market at Beach Street, Felixstowe on Saturday 4 December! It was a brilliant opportunity for us to provide a preview of the type of fresh bakery items we are working on, alongside some of the exciting food and drink products we will be offering in the Vikings café, such as TrueStart Coffee, alongside a select number of retail goods, including Beebombs.

So, what’s next for Vikings Bakehouse? In case you missed it, we have already announced a special Suffolk Vegans event taking place at The Gallery on Wednesday 26 January! Stay tuned for updates on other events and upcoming collaborations.

In the meantime, please enjoy these lovely photographs of the vegan market, taken by Mikaela Jade Photography.

Behind every bite, there is a story

You may fancy festive flavours or indulgent double chocolate…or perhaps mixed berries are more your thing? This delicious Mindful Bites collection is available at our market stall at the Suffolk Vegans market this coming Saturday!

Mindful Bites are an ethical company that proclaims it is possible to produce good food without inflicting suffering or exploitation along the supply chain.

Their mission statement is clear and uncompromising.

“Behind every bite, there is a story. From the African women harvesting baobab to escape extreme poverty, to the resilient maca growers on top of the Andes in Peru. Sustainability, to us, also means positive social impact for the farmers, their families and wider communities.”

Mindful Bites

Working with ethical companies is exceptionally important to us. Mindful Bites, along with TrueStart Coffee, are examples of the type of businesses that share our passion and our values.

Vikings love the sea, and TrueStart Coffee is making waves!

We are super excited not only to be arriving at Beach Street Felixstowe this Saturday for the vegan market, but to be doing so powered by our favourite coffee brand, TrueStart! We will be selling a selection of instant cold brew cans – including the amazing chilli chocolate flavour – and tins of barista-grade instant coffee!

The elegant 250ml cold brew cans are truly tremendous, with a flavour for everybody! You could play it safe with original black, but there is also chilli chocolate, vanilla coconut, and salted caramel. All of the cold brew cans are low in calories and are, of course, 100% vegan. TrueStart’s instant coffee defies expectations, and each 100g tin is good for around 50 servings. Never has instant gratification been so dignified!

So, on Saturday morning, wake-up, head to the vegan market at Beach Street, smell the TrueStart coffee (and, er, drink some!), and then buy a pack of four cans and a tin or two of instant coffee for the special person in your life!

In 2022, to fully complete the Vikings Bakehouse coffee line-up, we are looking forward to serving freshly brewed TrueStart filter coffee in the Vikings Bakehouse café!

Why TrueStart?

TrueStart is a Bristol-based start-up and is one of the fastest growing drinks brands in the United Kingdom. TrueStart’s bold, energetic approach, say founders Simon and Helena, is to rise above the tired, complacent brands which “dominate the coffee industry, with countless sugary, milky, poor quality products that do not resonate with our generation at all – we’re worlds apart in terms of ethics and attitude to life.”

Ethics and attitude? We’re down with that.

We look forward to a long-term partnership with TrueStart!
